Week 37/2022

After O.’s birthday parties, our main event became the move towards the end of the month. Any chance we could get, we would pack a box, organise clothes, throw things out, give things away. Because of this, I got to know a few charities around Lausanne (SOS Mamans, CSP) to which we donated stuff we don’t need any more.

Even though we can give things we don’t need away, I can’t help but think that this is the easy path to discharge my conscience about having more stuff than we actually need. I’ve been thinking about how we can be more mindful of the stuff we bring home.

O. spent the week playing with the gifts she got for her birthday, which were the only toys lying around once I packed her other toys… or so I thought. She is only 3, and I still cannot believe how many toys we were able to accumulate over these years. Could we maybe put a limit on toys that are gifted for birthdays and Christmas? Anyway, she is really keen on Lego these days and has built some interesting things, such as this aeroplane with flowers, piloted by a woman.

This little girl (all little girls?) really needs to spend her energy outdoors every day, so when she is home we take her out every day, even when there is a lot of packing and organising to do at home. However, by the weekend I began to get fed up with the rinse-repeat routine, going to the same parks, doing the same things, so on Sunday we took the scooter and went for a longer walk/ride to the forest (first picture). We sat for a snack on the way. We gathered some acorns, some twigs and some stones and rode home. It was nice and sunny, and it was a glorious change for me. I am content with little, these days.
